Goals from Campbell and Collins put AFC Wallingford in to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup last night after beating Maidenhead United U18s 2-1.
Wallingford came out on top in a game of contrasting styles as Allied Counties Premier Division outfit Maidenhead, who were unbeaten in 8 games this season, looked to bully their way into the next round with the direct longball style. However it was Wallingfords fast football and some excellent work from Jordan Brown who got Wallingford 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. Brown was brought down after a mazy run for Campbell to calmly put away the penalty and it was another magical run and clever pass from Brown that allowed Collins to ease Wallingford into a two goal lead. Maidenheads long ball style then forced themseleves back into the game after some sloppy defending allowed them to bring the score back to 2-1 before half time. The second half continued with Maidenhead launching ball after ball into the Wallingford box but to little effect and as the game wore on Wallingford controlled the pace and tempo. Wallingford even had chances to finish the game of despite a late scare when a Maidenhead player headed over when free at the back post in the closing stages.
Wallingford now face a trip to the West as they are to face either Blue Square Premier outfit Forest Green Rovers or British Gas Southern League side Yate Town in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
