Wallingford ended their pre season campaign with a close 2-1 defeat against Reading Senior League Reading YMCA.
In an entertaining encounter, the visitors started the brighter and went close early on through Smith bringing out a fine save from Garry Clark, returning in the AFC goal after an absence of 2 years. Wallingford were playing some neat football in midfield with Primmer and Chalmers pulling the strings before YMCA took the lead on 20 minutes when poor defending allowed Seymour to steal in at the far post to finish well from 5 yards.
Wallingford rolled up their sleeves and their good passing football was rewarded on 40 minutes when fine work from Chalmers and Simmonds allowed Mike Starkey room to fire an unstoppable drive into the top corner. Brad Chalmers went close just before half time, but his fine drive was well saved by the visiting keeper.
AFC started well in the 2nd half, with both Gibbons and Starkey going close following good wing play from Nathan Hill. However, in the 65th minute Reading scored what proved to be the winner when Sidwell got free in the box and managed to score at the 2nd time of asking following another good stop from Clark.
This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home side and Reading should have added another from Smith but he blazed well over from close range.
AFC now look forward to their opening North Berks League fixture when they welcome Drayton to Hithercroft, this Saturday for a 2.30pm kick off.
