Wallingford began the Didcot Festival Cup with a comfortable win over North Berks Division 2 side East Hendred on Tuesday night, with new signing Paul Powell netting a hatrick.
Powell had already gone close in the opening minutes before his clever pass put Johnny Hammond in the clear to score with an excellent finish into the roof of the net. Ten minutes later Tito Rodriguez threaded the ball through for Powell to run clear and tap the ball confidently past the oncoming 'keeper and into an empty net, the ball just creeping inside the far post. Powell was denied by the keeper shortly afterwards, but just before half-time Hammond put the ex-Oxford United and Didcot Town player in the clear again and he blasted into the roof of the net at the second attempt. Carl Fisher made a brilliant point blank save to keep the score at 3-0 at the break.Wallingford continued to look comfortable in the second half, despite finding fewer chances begging. Powell and Nathan Hill were denied by good defensive blocks before Powell completed his hatrick with a sliding finish from Rodriguez's clever pass.
