Wallingford came agonisingly close to gaining an unlikely away win at Highworth on Saturday.
Missing several key players, the visitors might not have fancied their chances against 6th placed Highworth, but they fought superbly and led the game up to the 75th minute.
Wallingford began well with the wind behind them, Craig Pitson and Michael Weir went close before Sean Weston opened the scoring after half an hour, his shot from the edge of the area taking a big deflection to beat the keeper. The visitors defended well, Highworth mustering only a couple of efforts straight at debutant keeper Duncan Turner..
Wallingford then so nearly made it 2-0. Debanks long ball caused problems for the Highworth defence and under pressure from Weir, the keeper could only punch the ball straight to Steve Wood, but the veteran striker's shot was saved.
Highworth played with the wind behind them in the second half and dominated possession, but they struggled to create many clear cut chances in the blustery conditions. Wallingford continued to battle superbly, and looked to be heading for a shock victory until the 75th minute when Brad Chalmers and Turner went for the same cross and Turner spilled the ball. After a goalmouth scramble substitute Phil Corcoran poked the ball home for the equaliser.
