Hi. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch to ask about John. He will be kept in the John Radcliffe overnight for observation and should be out by lunchtime tomorrow after a small operation to fix a dislocated finger.
For those of you who were (or weren't) at the match today and didn't know what had happened, John was knocked unconscious by a clash of heads after bravely coming out to claim a corner. His head hit the ground hard as well and he started to fit, just like John Terry when he was knocked out in last season's cup final.
John was conscious and making as much sense as he ever does before the ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital as a precaution. He had some neck pain (proved to be nothing serious). The finger is one that he has dislocated before and it needs a bit of work to stop it popping out again.
It is an unfortunate way to spend your birthday, especially as John had reservations at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in London with a party organised afterwards. Instead he was in a bed next to a confused 91 year old woman who had fallen down the stairs. We tried to convince him that she was an "alzheimergram" organised by his teammates but he knew they were far too stingy to cough up the necessary cash for anything that exotic.
John and his mum have asked me to thank Iain and Rod for the help they gave on the field before the ambulance arrived. Thanks also to the many people who have phoned me to ask for news (that's why my battery died!) and the many people in the club from hockey and rugby who saw the ambulance and have passed on their best wishes.
Everyone at the club wishes John all the best for a swift and complete recovery.
