AFC Wallingford were just minutes away from their 2nd league victory of the season on Saturday but sloppy defending in injury time saw them hand all 3 points to relegation rivals Pegasus. Wallingford had taken a deserved 3-2 lead before mistakes let in Hyde and Price both in injury time to seal AFCs fate and leave them 2nd from bottom of the table.
AFC had 4 players making debuts with recent signings Stout, Weir, Matthews and 16 year old Davies all making their first starts and it was Wallingford who carved out the early chances. It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead 14 minutes in when a well flighted Shaun Weston corner was powerfully headed home by Tommy Heyday. Juniors came back strong however and were level a minute later when a looping free kick from Griffiths eluded everyone and dropped into John Sheas net and the Hereford took the lead on 20 minutes when the ball fell kindly to Hyde who made no mistake from 12 yards out. Pegasus continued to pressure AFC but Shea made 2 terrific saves in the visitor’s goal to keep them in the game.
Wallingford started the 2nd half the stronger team and periods of excellent football created some good openings with Aaron Davies playing particularly well down the right, looking very comfortable at this level. AFC were level with 20 mins remaining as Weir crossed from the right, the ball was only half cleared and Heyday thundered the ball in from 20 yards for his 2nd of the afternoon. Pegasus always looked dangerous on the attack and John Shea pulled off further good stops to deny Stack and Price before some quick footwork and an excellent finish from Brad
Chalmers put AFC ahead after a fine cross from Debanks.
Wallingford thought they had done enough but injury time mistakes gave Juniors the win they barely deserved. AFC must now pick themselves up and face a tough match at Hithercroft vs North Oxon side Hook Norton this Saturday.
