Carterton 1 AFC Wallingford 0 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 November 2007
AFC Wallingford turned in one of their best performances for some time as they were unlucky to go down 1-0 at mid table Carterton on Saturday. Wallingford started the game with several personnel changes after a week of disruption, Gordon Hearmon returning in the AFC goal after several years away and new signings Matty Irons and Craig Mcmahon turning in particularly good displays.

The visitors started the game strongly and despite Carterton going close early on, Ian Fenn and Brad Chalmers marshalled the AFC defence expertly allowing the midfield and front lines to dominate for long periods, Irons going close from a header and Wallingford forcing a succession of corners. In was a little against the run of play when the only goal came, just before the break Wallingford losing possession and Williams chipping Hearmon from 25 yards, for a well taken effort.

The 2nd half continued in much the same fashion, Wallingford playing some excellent football, just lacking that final cutting edge, a problem they have encountered all season. With Michael Fellows pulling the strings along with Lambert and Mcmahon, Wallingford created a few half chances but were unable to score. Carterton always looked lively on the break and could have wrapped up the points on 85 minutes when Williams, who had an excellent game for the west oxon outfit, hit the bar.

However, Pete Lamont’s side can take great heart from this performance when they more than matched their opponents, and will need to keep this momentum going when 2nd bottom side Harrow Hill, also without a win, visit Hithercroft on Saturday 10th.

AFC Wallingford: Hearmon, Weston, De’banks, Fenn, Chalmers, Lambert, Fellows, McMahon, Irons, Hayday, Lamont. Subs not used: Mchadin, De’Souza.
