AFC Wallingford exited the Floodlit cup on Tuesday night to a strong Hungerford Town side, their second defeat to the West Berks outfit in as many weeks.
AFC started with new signing Tim Barton up front and he was instrumental as Wallingford made the early running, Wilson, Brewerton and Simpson all having half chances early on Wilson in particular a thorn in Hungerford’s side. Darren Quegan also went close with a free kick but Hungerford always looked dangerous and took the lead on 30 mins when a poor Simpson back header fell kindly to Concannon and the former AFC man made no mistake from 6 yards. The 2nd came just before the break, Gosling allowed space and he drilled a low shot into the corner from 20 yards.
The 2nd half saw Hungerford move up a gear and Concannon scored his 2nd after good work from Graham Edney, Concannon then hit the post before Rob Simpson nearly made up for his earlier error when he thundered a 25 yard effort against the bar with Green in the visitors goal well beaten. This proved to be a false dawn however as goals 4 and 5 soon followed for Hungerford from Shand and Mcrae, the latter after poor Wallingford defending at a corner.
Hungerford then took their foot off the gas a little but Wallingford did well to get some reward for their play when substitute Sam Taylor netted from close range after a Wallingford corner and good play from Richard Wilson.
AFC now face the long trip to Hereford on Saturday to face fellow strugglers Peagasus and will be looking to gain their first win of the season.
