Shelley Strange has been made first-team coach of Premier Division side AFC Wallingford.
It's the first time in the history of the League that a woman has been held such a position.
Strange, who will qualify for the FA Level Three (UEFA B) coaching licence in October, has been a full time coach with Reading FC's football in the community programme for four years.
She also runs coaching sessions for youngsters at schools and clubs in Oxfordshire and Berkshire.
Strange, who has managed the under 10 team at the Reading Girls' centre of excellence for two years, was also part of the Reading FC women's side that won the Southern Region Women's League title.
Hellenic League general secretary Brian King welcomed the appointment of Strange.
"I have never known any club appoint a female first-team coach in my years in the league and I have been here since 1991," said King.
"I know there are a number of clubs with female physiotherapists."
"As far as I am concerned, football is a game for all people."
"Shelley is ambitious. She is a fully qualified coach. She's going to get her Level 3 coaching licence, which means all she's got left is her UEFA A and pro licence."
Strange will work alongside Carl Fisher who took over as boss from Andy Gordon who stepped down after ten years with the club. |
