Andy Gordon has resigned as manager of AFC Wallingford after nearly a decade at the club. He took over as first team manager two and a half years ago after spells running the reserves and the youth team.
Andy felt that increasing work pressures, and a desire to spend more time with his family, meant he would be unable to make the commitment needed to run the team next season. The club appreciate the sacrifices any manager must make to run a team playing twice and occasionally three times a week. We understand Andy’s reasons for stepping down, and with great reluctance we have accepted his resignation. Andy took over the first team with the club in crisis and losing touch at the bottom of the Combined Counties Premier Division. If he hadn’t stepped in, the future of the club itself was in doubt. Avoiding relegation proved a step too far, but Andy led the squad to second place in Division One the next season and promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt. That summer saw some restructuring with the demise of the Isthmian League Division Two. Wallingford took a step into the unknown, tranferring into the Hellenic League Premier Division. Andy and the squad more than achieved their targets for the season, consolidating our position in the division, reaching the Supplementary Cup final, and beating Southern League side Burnham in the FA Cup. The club would like to thank Andy for the tremendous contribution he has made over the years. We hope that he will choose to remain with the club in some capacity, and we wish him every success in the future. The club committee will meet over the weekend to discuss options for next season. We expect to make a further announcement on Monday. |
