Wallingford continued their form from the weekend with a convincing win over Carterton, in a match where they should have won by a greater margin.
On a dusty, hard pitch, the visitors played some excellent flowing football. Zinzee Taha in particular caused the Carterton defence all sorts of problems with his pace, and after 20 minutes dispossessed a defender and rifled the ball narrowly over the bar. Abdouli Taha then showed a brilliant bit of skill and curled in a good cross into the centre where Zinzee headed inches over the bar. The same player then shot narrowly wide after a good chip from Ross Tyler, but finally got on the score sheet after 35 minutes, nicking the ball off a defender and using his pace to spring clear before side-footing past the keeper. At the other end Shea made a brilliant save against the crossbar, while Tyler drove the ball just wide of the far post shortly before half-time after a good ball in from Foday Touray. Wallingford continued their dominance in the second half, and on 50 minutes Zinzee Taha completely skinned a defender for pace, rounded the keeper, but could not keep the ball in play and it ran out for a goal kick. Taha then forced a great save out of the Carterton keeper with a smart volley from a good cross from Paul Massaquoi. However, Wallingford were left to rue their missed chances with twenty minutes to go, Gary Cornwell heading home after Wallingford failed to clear a rare attack from the home side. However, Ross Tyler was the match-winner, rounding off an excellent individual display with a superb goal with 15 minutes to go, a powerfully hit shot from just outside the area that flew low inside the post to the keeper’s left. James Leggett had a curling shot tipped over late on and Wallingford comfortably held on for a well deserved 3 points. |
