Wallingford's unbeaten run came crashing to an end with an emphatic thrashing at home to Highworth.
Despite a great start to the season, there had been question marks over some of the defending in previous games, and the visitors fully exploited this. Wallingford were never outplayed in this game and always looked confident on the ball and going forward, but the pace and movement of Cooper and Miller up front for the visitors caused all sorts of problems at the back. Cooper rounded the keeper to score after five minutes and then missed a sitter to double the lead minutes later. Miller then found space on the left and crossed to Cleverly for a simple finish on 30 minutes. Lee Fuller, Foday Touray and Zinzee Taha also went close for the home side however, and Ross Tyler forced the keeper to save with his legs after a brilliant solo run. Wallingford looked capable of getting back into the game, but just two minutes after the break, Cleverly got on the end of a long cross from the left and beat Shea with a superb chip to make it 3-0. Wallingford continued to press, with Tyler forcing the keeper to tip the ball against the bar with a free-kick and Baker also going close, but Highworth were devastating on the counter attack with Miller and Plotrowski making it 5-0 before Wallingford pulled one back when substitute Tim Parker crossed from the right and Abdouli Taha controlled brilliantly and poked the ball past the keeper for his fifth goal of the season. Late on, two defensive errors made the scoreline even worse, with Miller and Plotrowski taking full advantage to round off a nightmare Saturday afternoon for Wallingford. |
